Bringing the News Back to a Small Town

The Eudora Times is an award-winning, student-produced online publication that has brought local news back to the nearby town of Eudora, Kansas, after nearly two decades without coverage. The news site was founded in 2019 by Associate Professor Teri Finneman, who identified a need for coverage in Eudora, which had become a "news desert," a term to describe small communities that no longer have local news due to previous publications shutdowns. Eudora Times reporters regularly travel to the town for interviews and photo shoots to ensure that important news is covered and that citizens remain informed.

The Eudora Times operates throughout the fall and spring semesters. Students can get involved in a variety of beats from City Hall to sports to features to education and get real world experience covering community journalism. The Eudora Times welcomes students from all media backgrounds, including television, public relations and strategic communication, to produce content and promote our online products.

As the only journalists providing regular local news coverage, students working for the Eudora Times have become a valued part of the community. In 2021, the Eudora mayor recognized one of the student reporters with a certificate of appreciation for her outstanding contributions to the community for her work with the Eudora Times.

Past student reporters of The Eudora Times have gone on to jobs at places like The Washington Post, Kansas City PBS and the Lawrence Times immediately after graduation. The Eudora Times is a member newspaper of the Kansas Press Association.
