A strategic communications internship with the City of Eudora provides opportunities for new ideas, personal growth, and public service to a self-driven and creative student, interested in a professional communications career. The City Manager's office seeks to maintain and improve effective communication with current Eudora residents, as well as attrack newcomers and economic development to the area.

General definition of work
Engages and informs citizens by providing strategic, relevant, accurate and timely information about city initiatives, programs, projects and services. This work is accomplished through writing, editing, graphic design, photography and videography. Work is performed under the general direction of the Assistant City Manager.

Essential functions
Create promotional materials by conceptualizing and designing a variety of printed and electronic materials, including brochures, flyers, strategic informational communications pieces (infographics and FAQs); and resident and economic development recruitment materials

Manage the city's digital and print publications by gathering content from the community and city departments, writing the copy, arranging photos and sections, and managing subscriptions

Manage the various social media platforms for the administration office by keeping content fresh and relevant, engaging with audiences, and proposing innovative ways for the city to understand what residents want to know and how they want to receive information

Recommend innovative ways to connect with the community

Perform related duties of similar nature or level as assigned or approved

Possible functions
Manage the City's mobile app by ensuring the user experience is relevant and useful, and market the app to increase use

Manage updates and changes to the City's main website under the direction of the Assistant City Manager and upon the request of other City employees; using best practices and site analytics, propose modifications to formatting and use to improve site visitor engagement and usefulness

Create press releases to send to local media outlets regarding City programs, notices and community news

Assist the City Manager's office in branding initiatives, including standardization of the City's brand and logo, use on approved items and consistency of use

Conduct surveys of residents to aid in grant applications and effectiveness and responsiveness of City operations

Knowledge, skills and abilities
Knowledge of strategic communications, graphic design, interactive technology, and photography required. Knowledge of public relations, public information, public administration, marketing and videography preferred. Skills in social media, web-based platforms, website content management and strong problem-solving skilsl and acute attention to detail required. Mobile application and experience with the Adobe Creative Suite preferred. Ability to make sound recommendations for solutions and innovative ways to approach communications; to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, civic and business leaders, associates and the general public.

Education and experience
Undergraduate and graduate student enrolled majoring in journalism, marketing, communications, public relations, or related field, with a minimum of 30 hours in one of the aforementioned fields.

Physical requirements
The work requires the frequent exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and convehying detailed or important instructions to others accurately; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data

Special requirements
Valid driver's license in Kansas
