A lot of petty theft at the briefing today, but nothing significant.

There was a sexual battery report filed, but no case number was provided. There are four KU female victims, aged 21, 22, 22, and 23 who reported the sexual battery at 3:00 am April 25. The four victims are roommates. The battery occurred in the "central part of town." The victims said an unidentified white male his 20s, 5' 10'', 120 lbs dressed in a lime green polo, entered through a window. One victim saw the suspect in front of her bedroom door and yelled at him to leave. Suspect left. Suspect appeared under the influence of something.

Case #02-06-4854. Date of report: 4/18/06. Date of crime: unknown. Vic: Sarah Smith (KU student). Charges: Criminal trespassing, eavesdropping. Suspect entered vic's apartment & installed camera to bedroom window with tape. Victim did not notice camera until curtain rod was lying on bed some time later. Police department canvassed area. Still under investigation.

Case #02-06-4872 Date of report: 4/19/06. Vic: Erin Dunlap (KU student). Charges: Aggravated Burglary. Vic was in shower when she heard a loud noise. After shower, vic walked to back of house and noticed the rear door off its hinges and hanging by the door chain. 2x2 window shattered. No entry by suspect. Vic saw suspect standing on sidewalk south of house.

Case #03-06-981 Eldon Miller Charge: Aggravated escape from custody Eldon was in the law enforcement center at 9:25 a.m. for an appointment with his probation officer, was served with warrant, decided to try to run away. Caught by 2 female deputy sheriffs on stairs.

Case #02-06-4815 Charge: Criminal use of a weapon Anonymous tip said 16 year old male had possession of metal knuckles in backpack at Southwest Junior High School.

A female KU student with male companion reported a case of lewd and luscious behavior. The female victim said a male suspect in his early 30s dressed in black sweatshirt and gray sweatpants exposed himself to her on the 1400 block of Ohio. The incident occurred on 4-8-06 at 22:50. Sexual crime, no names given. No arrests were made.

KU Student Jessica Barker reported the theft of a maroon GT Arrete hybrid bike, valued at $267, on 3/31 between hours of 0700-2100. Incident took place at 1030.5, Ohio St.

KU Student Scott White reported burglary of a Trek 1200 10 speed bike, serial #1006495 from his residence at 733 Tennessee St. Bike is valued at $800

Criminal damage. Four tires with two-inch punctures on three different vehicles. Punctures appear to be caused by a knife. All victims are KU Students and are roomates at the 1200 block of Ohio St, at which the incident occured. Reported 3/31-4/1, 2315-2330 hours. One victim recieved text message from roommate saying his tire was low. The roomates inspected their other cars and noticed the damage to all three vehicles. Dustin Volz- Toyota 4-Runner Reed Niermeyer- 2001 Infinity Matthew Selzer- 2002 Toyota 4-Runner Victims had no idea on possible suspects.

Accident report- #0206 70635
On 12th and Kentucky, a vehicle struck and hit a park car while traveling westbound. The driver, 16-year-old Genevieve Rucker, was trying to avoid a northbound car and swerved and hit the parked car, pinning a pedestrian between two cars. The pedestrian, 58 year-old former Douglas County fireman ,Ted McFarlane, was airlifted to a Kansas City hospital due to serious injuries. Rucker is not suspected of using alcohol. In the car with her was an adult and a 15 year-old relative. The accident happened around 5:00pm on Sunday, March 12.

She was getting ready to go out w/friends on 3/9 and, her ex-boyfriend showed up outside her door. She locked stuff up, waited for him to leave and stayed at a friend’s house that night. She returned home that morning, saw car resembling his parked outside. Apartment had three glass picture frames on counter was broken, two paintings had canvas slashed.

Police officer assisted a deputy sheriff who was on patrol at the scene. The deputy had seen the suspects strike the victim. One suspect fled on foot but was caught by deputy. Employee witnessed victim being struck and instructed suspects to go home. Two suspects were arrested.

Moped parked in front of apartment building. He had the keys.

Four KU students stole t-shirts from Sun Creations. Also took $4280 in misc. power tools from tools from Harris construction (720 E. 9th), which were all recovered. This happened on 3/13 from 12:30 AM-1:26 AM. Unsure if these burglaries were the result of storm (Looting). Alcohol was involved.

All four were arrested.

A red, 1999 Honda dirt bike was stolen out of the back of a truck bed at IHOP, 3102 Iowa. Mark Fulks, of Eudora, went in to eat and came outside to find that his dirt bike, which was strapped down in the back of his pickup truck, was gone. No suspects are known.

There was a forced entry at 834 Kentucky, nothing was reported stolen.

Amanda Whitaker of Lawrence reported an unknown substance in her gas tank. She did not know the location, date, or time that the substance appeared. However, her car broke down last Wednesday, and it was discovered that her engine suffered significant damage because of an unknown substance in the gasoline. There are no known suspects.

There was a theft reported at Naismith Hall. Stacey Stout, 20 year-old resident of Naismith Hall, reported that her Nikon digital camera was stolen. The cost is estimated at $500. There is an 18 year-old white male in custody, and an investigation is in progress.

A 17 year-old white male of Lawrence High School is in custody due to a possible drug confiscation. The student was taken into custody after a high school security guard suspected that the individual was in possession of illegal contraband. The student claimed that the substance was nothing more than herbs that he bought at a nutritional store. The property was taken to labs for testing, and the student is in juvenile intake.

No weapon was involved
Suspect is 19 y/o white male, officers responded to a 911 hangup. The suspect wouldn’t allow victim to call for help
line was busy when department tried to call back
Officers arrived observed victim walking dog on side of complex, looked upset, she and b/f had been in argument.


Student Molly Ogren reported theft of her Apple G4 powerbook in Naismith Hall 3/4-3/5 1930-0200 hours valued at $2500
Entered victim’s unlocked bedroom and stole the laptop.

Suspect Riley Dylan Rohling was arrested 3/5 (Sunday afternoon at 14:11)
Suspect developed after interviews around area
Suspect denies knowledge of how he could have came in to possession

Battery + Disorderly at South Jr. High School. no info given about minor suspects/victims

Possible aggravated rape charge involving possible transmission of disease. Statutes and HEPA protects victim and suspect information, but possible information found thru attending 1st hearing of the case, which may be today or tomorrow; for more info go to DA office + find log of this case... incident occurred last night.

Disorderly conduct charge involving 20 yr. old KU student/victim Brock Potucet and 27 y.o. non-student. 27 y.o. accosted Potucet at 1242 Louisiana while wearing a mask; Potucet did not at first recognize person...27 y.o. demanding a clown head. 20 y.o. said he did not know anything about the clown head. Conversation got considerably more agressive and harassing regarding whereabouts of clown head. There was a fight over possession of a phone. Suspect left. Police were dispatched at 9:45 a.m. When police were called, Potucet was following the man who had demanded the clown head away from his home, suspect was on foot on Ohio Street. Police got victim and suspect back to the home at 1242 LA and spent 2 hours with the victim and suspect to determine whereabouts of said clown head. In the course of the investigation, clown head was located. The suspect decided not to press charges for theft. Police left at 11:45.

Brock Potucet: 864-2700

While waiting for Kim Murphree I sat in on the sentencing of Jason W. Dillon in Division 4 court. Dillon pleaded no contest to 2nd degree murder and abuse of a child in the case. Dillon, after a cocaine and alcohol binge, was babysitting the child of his girlfriend, Rachel Perkins. He admitted to hitting the baby in the back of the head 13 times...then, told Rachel Perkins the child had fallen down the stairs when he noticed the child, Sydney Perkins, wasn't breathing.

As per the plea agreement, he was found guilty of aggravated murder and sentenced to 165 months; for abuse of a child, Dillon was sentenced to 34 months. He will have the opportunity to get a reduced sentence at a prison institution for good behaviour.

On Saturday, Feb. 25 University of Kansas student Aaron Bazata reported the theft of his motor vehicle. Officers were dispatched to 501 Maple St. at 1:30 PM. The theft of his white 1996 4-door Nissan Altima occured on the 600 block of Massachusetts Street in front of Free State Brewery between 1:15AM and 12:30 PM. Victim said he had the only set of keys and nothing of value was inside the car. Value of the car was estimated at $3000 and it has not yet been located.

Battery was reported on Sat., Feb. 25 occurring between 2:00 and 2:05 AM at Quinton's Bar & Deli, 615 Massachusetts Street. Christopher Proctor, KU Student, was the victim. He was approached near closing time and was told that it was "time to leave" by an unidentified white male. Proctor responded that he did not need help leaving and the suspect grabbed the victim's shirt, threw him to the ground and escorted him out of the bar.

Battery was reported on Fri, Feb. 24 occurring between 1:15 and 1:30 AM on the 1100 Block of Tennessee Street involving KU Students Anthony Coluces and Alyssa Stern and reporting party Zachary Friedlander, Neosho County Community College student. Victims got out of the car and unidentified suspects jumped out of nearby bushes, attacked victims, and quickly left..

Arson/Automobile Burglary Reported on Saturday, Feb. 11 in between 3:40-3:51 AM Victim: Matthew Britton (785)550-1186 (KU Student) Lives on/ happened at 1024 New York st. Officer observed two vehicles on fire near the alley: 1993 Infinity, damage appx. $3500 1996 Plymouth, dmg. appx $500 Suspect stole the following items out of the vehicles and then set them on fire: Clairon cd player $300 Backpack $20 The suspect was not apprehended There was another attempted arson involving a non-KU student at 1204 New York close to the same time.

Gretchen Kidd, ku student reported a Hewlett Packard Laptop stolen and valued at $800. $150 cash and a CD case w/100 cds valued at $800 were also stolen.

KU employee Jennifer Decker had her license plate stolen She lives at 1703 w 25th st, but it's unclear where in Lawrence it was stolen. Her number is 785-749-4406

Three KU students reported criminal damage at their residence at 2900 Bob Billing pkwy on 2/11 between. Incident occured between 1:30 AM and 8:30 AM. Graffiti was painted on their vehicles. Eric Benavidez: 2005 Dodge Neon $1000 Janet Irungu: Toyota Corolla $500 Wade Rundquist: '94 Explorer $550 Two trash dumpsters were painted on as well. This happened earlier this month at Aberdine apts, but there is no evidence showing that the incidents are related. There were no suspects.

Between the hours of 9 p.m. Feb. 3rd and 3 a.m. Feb. 4 on 1301 West 24th St. A 21 male victim (Haitham Alabdulali) reported theft of his passport. There was a charge of criminal damage. Suspect entered locked residence and took victim's passport. Damaged deadbolt lock. Police were contacted by victim. Suspect not apprehended. Victim didn't know why he was targeted.

Theft in a motor vehicle between 4PM-6AM North Face jacket valued at $150 Motorola flip top cell phone - $400 22 year old KU student reported it.

KU student Ashley C. Smith reported following stolen: -Pink Coach purse $200 -$30 cash -Nokia 6255i cell phone $250 -KU I.D. and D.L.

49 year old male suspect was engaged in innapropriate behavior on Feb. 4 between 6:40 and 6:55 on 1345 West Campus Rd (Ki-Omega Sorority house). Suspect was in mini van lying back in seat and innapropriatly using his hands.

The Lawrence police department holds a briefing for the media each morning (usually starting around 10 a.m.) in room 237 at the police department (111 E. 11th Street). This is our opportunity to catch up on overnight crime and get updates on previous stories.
