James K. Gentry, Ph.D., is the Clyde M. Reed Teaching Professor and former dean at the School of Journalism and Mass Communications.

Gentry is nationally known for his ability to turn complicated financial and accounting information into understandable language for corporate communicators, journalists and students. For three decades, he has taught thousands of communicators and journalists how to understand the language of business.

He also has been nationally recognized for his teaching. In 2008, he received the Barry Sherman Teaching Award from the Media Management and Economics Division of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC). The award recognizes excellence and innovation in teaching of media management and economics.

Gentry had two in-depth articles examining the business of college sports published in The New York Times in 2011. They were co-written with Washington and Lee professor Raquel Alexander. In spring 2014, their article “Using social media to report financial results,” appeared in Business Horizons, a scholarly journal published by the Kelly School of Business at Indiana University.

Gentry created and teaches “Financial Fundamentals for Communicators” for graduate students in the school’s Marketing Communications master’s program on the Edwards Campus and for undergraduates in Lawrence. He also created and teaches “Entrepreneurship for Communicators” for graduate and undergraduate students.

He also teaches Multimedia Management and Leadership in Lawrence, and Capstone in Marketing Communications at the Edwards Campus. The capstone course has worked with clients including the The American Restaurant, the Roasterie, the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and CASA of Wyandotte and Johnson counties, among others.

Gentry has presented workshops across the nation for the Reynolds National Center for Business Journalism and the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) designed to improve the financial knowledge of business reporters and corporate communicators. He has been named an All-Star speaker by IABC.

Gentry has presented workshops for Cerner Corp., American Standard Co. (now Trane), Teva Neurosciences, Freddie Mac, AMC Entertainment, WABCO and Alibaba. He’s also conducted sessions for Bloomberg News, USA Today, the San Jose Mercury News and the Seattle Times.

In 2003, Gentry received the Society of American Business Editors and Writers’ Distinguished Achievement Award. Gentry was SABEW’s first executive director in 1984-90 and ran the Business Journalism Program while he was at the University of Missouri.

Prior to joining KU in 1997, Gentry was dean at the University of Nevada, Reno for five years and was a member of the faculty at the University of Missouri School of Journalism for 14 years.

Honors

  • 2012, John Katich Award for Creativity from the School of Journalism. The award goes to a journalism faculty member who has demonstrated creativity in teaching, research, service or a combination of these areas.
