Earl Richardson

Earl RichardsonPhotojournalist and copyright attorney

I am a 57-year-old native and current resident of Lawrence, and I have a BSJ from the University of Kansas (1983). I have more than 30 years experience as a photojournalist working for newspapers, wire services, magazines, and a wide variety of commercial clients. I am also a licensed copyright attorney.

I have been a staff photographer at the Lawrence (KS) Journal-World, Kansas City Star, Columbia (MO) Daily Tribune and the Topeka (KS) Capital-Journal. I was also the Director of Photography at the Capital-Journal from 2001-2003. While on the staff of the Kansas City Star in 1981, we were awarded the Pulitzer Prize for our coverage of the Hyatt Skywalk collapse.

My experiences as a visual communicator are extensive and varied and include mentoring and managing a staff of seven photographers, being among the first photojournalists in Kansas to adopt digital photography as my primary medium, working as a page designer, working as a staff photographer at several newspapers, and working as a commercial photographer for corporate and not-for-profit clients.

Most recently, I’ve managed my own commercial photography business as well as earning a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Kansas Law School (2008) where I studied intellectual property and burgeoning issues concerning the rapid explosion of digital content and digital content delivery and the legal, economic and practical challenges that technology poses for content creators.
