Senior Software Engineer, Google
David Stewart (j'90) was the editor of the University Daily Kansan for Fall 1989. After graduating, he took a job as a copy editor at the Statesman-Journal in Salem, Oregon. A year later, he quit without a plan. He ended up combining his journalism skills with his interest in gadgets and started a newsletter about an early handheld computer (the Atari Portfolio). That led to a few part-time computer-programming jobs for friends, then a few full-time jobs at small companies, and then a career spanning most of the biggest tech companies: Microsoft, Amazon, Facebook and Google. Stewart is currently a senior software engineer at Google, working on Google Maps.
