Annie Gowen

National Correspondent, Washington Post

Annie Gowen is a national correspondent for the Washington Post, covering the Midwest through the 2020 presidential election.

She previously was The Post’s South Asia bureau chief  from 2013-2018, covering India, other South Asian nations and Myanmar’s transition to democracy and its devastating aftermath. Her coverage of the Rohingya refugee crisis won the Daniel Pearl Award for reporting on South Asia in 2018.

She has reported from conflict zones in Ukraine and Iraq, where she spent the summer of 2011 examining the continued violence and ramifications of the U.S. troop withdrawal.

She earlier held a variety of positions on the Post’s Local staff. In 2007, she profiled several victims of the shootings at Virginia Tech, contributing to the Pulitzer Prize-winning coverage of that tragedy.

She is a graduate of the William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications at the University of Kansas and has a home in Alexandria, Va.
